The MLS started its journey of the CONCACAF Champions League down here in Costa Rica, the first match between Deportivo Saprissa and Impact Montreal was on Wednesday February 19th at 19:00 local time.
More than a battle bounded by soccer’s ice and fire, for an Sports Language Professional such as myself it was heaven on Earth. I arrived just in time the day before for the Press Conference and I was able to ask Saprissa’s Head Coach, Walter Centeno, a question but unfortunately; I could not talk with Thierry Henry (Impact Montreal’s Head Coach). On the bright side, I did take a few pictures and they are not so bad, right?
French, Spanish and English were the languages spoken during the Conference, with no official Interpreter whatsoever, I understand that who needed to understand what was being said managed to do so. However, I still think that was a missing opportunity (mostly for moi). It still felt like paradise to witness how can Sport bridge cultural lines and become an universal language.
Because that same feeling lasted all through the night of the match as well, diversity in its glory and I had the privilege to live it up close through my camera lens. Representation matters and if there are no Language Professionals included I will go and represent myself, if there are no open doors, create a window.
It was a very exciting and busy week, I will be uploading pictures on Instagram so follow cafeconmache there!
